IMAGO DEI STUDENTS “MOVE FOR THE MARATHON”
This spring Imago Dei board member Eliza Holland asked our students to help her train to run the Boston Marathon on April 16th. Using a modified training program, they have been running or walking daily in an effort to complete a total of 26 miles before April 16. Starting out with 1/4-mile daily goals, they have worked up to 1-mile walks/runs and are tracking their progress on a mileage chart in the classroom and on a marathon course map. After the marathon, the Imago Dei Running Team will be training for a 2-mile Cinco de Mayo run on May 6th and the Tucson 5000 5K on May 20th.
The students’ accomplishments are posted weekly on a website, http://www.firstgiving.com/imagodeiruns, which is also a fundraising site for Moving for the Marathon. The money is used to buy new running gear for the students. Please log onto the website and follow their progress as they complete their marathon and races in May.
This spring our students have been working with creative writing instructor Frances Sjoberg from the University of Arizona Poetry Center. They’ve been studying classic and contemporary poems and are developing their own poetic imaginations. In addition to learning about the power and beauty of creative expression, they are also gaining public presentation skills, as they read their poems aloud to the class. Here is a sampling of their recent work:
When I sing my voice is as beautiful
as a hummingbird singing.
When I go to the forest, then the
water goes down like fresh and
clean dishwater.
My hair in the morning is crazy like
crazy spaghetti.
My dog has light brown fur as a
wood floor.
My friend is cool as everything.
Ms. White is nice as everything and
anything.
When I kiss my mom it shocks me
like I get shocked from a plug-
in.
My poem is as sweet as the sweet
lovely sky.
- Heaven
I like pizza and I like to play my DS at home.
Also I have a big family: four boys and two
girls and my mom.
I like to eat pizza and I like to play my
DS light.
I like to play my DS light.
Play my DS
Play.
-Peter
I wish that I was a millionaire.
I wish that I was the President.
I wish that I was the prettiest girl in
the world.
I wish my dad was not in jail.
I wish my mom’s new boyfriend
was my dad.
I wish there were no kidnappers.
I wish I was very awesome.
I wish I was the smartest.
I wish I owned my own Eegees.
I wish I had the hottest boyfriend
in the world.
I wish my friend had a brother.
-Savanna

I wish I had 3 dogs
and 2 parrots.
I wish I had a new bike.
I wish I had a sister
that I lived with.
I wish I had a hamster.
I wish I went to Oregon.
I wish our school would get
even bigger.
